Urgent Update: 3rd Amendment to BS 7671 Wiring Regulations – effective from 1st July 2024

By Helen Morphew

We are issuing an urgent update to inform our clients and partners about the latest 3rd Amendment to the BS 7671 Wiring Regulations. These regulations are crucial for ensuring electrical safety and compliance in all building services designs across the UK. This amendment introduces several significant changes that will impact ongoing and future projects.

Key Changes in the 3rd Amendment

The 3rd Amendment to BS 7671 brings several essential updates aimed at enhancing electrical safety and system efficiency. The key changes are:

Enhanced Protection Against Electric Shock

  • Introduction of stricter requirements for Residual Current Devices (RCDs) to ensure enhanced protection against electric shock.
  • New guidelines on the use of surge protection devices (SPDs) to mitigate risks associated with transient overvoltage.
  • Updated Cable Sizing and Installation Methods
  • Revised criteria for cable sizing to improve energy efficiency and ensure the longevity of electrical installations.
  • Updated guidelines for the installation of cables in various environmental conditions, ensuring compliance with the latest safety standards.
  • Integration of Renewable Energy Systems
  • New provisions for the integration of renewable energy sources such as solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and wind turbines.
  • Guidelines to ensure safe and efficient connection of these systems to the existing electrical infrastructure.
  • Electrical Vehicle Charging Infrastructure
  • Enhanced requirements for the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging points, promoting the development of a more robust and safe charging infrastructure.
  • Specific considerations for the location, protection, and accessibility of EV charging installations.
  • Fire Safety and Emergency Systems
  • Stricter regulations for the installation of fire safety systems, including emergency lighting and fire alarm systems.
  • Updated requirements for the maintenance and testing of these critical safety systems to ensure ongoing compliance and functionality.

The main design changes include:

  • Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs) are now mandated for all circuits supplying socket outlets in residential premises.
  • Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) are now mandated in both new and existing systems during major upgrades.
  • Cable Support in Escape Routes. Cables must be supported in a way that prevents their premature collapse in the event of a fire, ensuring safe evacuation routes. The use of fire-resistant fixings and supports is now mandatory.
  • Energy Efficiency. This amendment aims to reduce a building’s carbon footprint and support the UK’s sustainability goals by designing electrical installations with energy efficiency in mind. This includes the selection of energy-efficient equipment and the implementation of energy saving measures.

Implementation Timeline

The 3rd Amendment to BS 7671 comes into effect from 1st July 2024.  All new projects and significant modifications to existing installations must adhere to these updated regulations.
